My universe, my rules

A philosophical interlude

After all we have learned so far, let’s take a moment or two to consider what it might mean. We like to think we’re in control of ourselves, and slowly making sense of the universe around us. But what if neither of those things is possible? As we dig deeper into how much of a role chance plays in our lives, there is a possibility we will uncover some uncomfortable truths. Uncomfortable, but undeniably fascinating: your free will is in doubt, for instance. What’s more, the laws of physics may ultimately prove unknowable. In fact, the very fundamental processes of the universe may be random chance – and for good reason: that may restore your free will, keep the future of the universe from being predetermined and stop information coming to you from the future. At the risk of inducing an existential crisis, it’s time to spend a moment or two in philosophical indulgence.
